How Search Engines Do Good
There is no doubt that search engines play an important part in our everyday life and it is hard to imagine a life without them. The most popular search engines are Google, Bing and Yahoo. Google alone counts around 63,000 search queries in a second. Search engines generate revenue mostly through paid advertising. Imagine that this money can be invested for a good cause. The search engine Gexsi came up with this great idea and they found a way to implement it.
One of the first projects of 180 Degrees Consulting Hamburg was to consult our past client Gexsi (Global Exchange for Social Investment). Gexsi is an independent social business based in Berlin and Freiburg which was founded in 2016. The aim of the organization is to support social innovators and projects that would change the world for better by redistributing the income generated via its search engine.
Searching via Gexsi happens pretty much the same way as searching via Google or Bing, the difference being that you are creating a positive impact by your search queries. Looking for information via Google generates advertising revenue which is used in the business context. Gexsi’s revenues get forwarded to social-driven projects that contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
180 Degrees Consulting Hamburg and Gexsi
180 Degrees Consulting Hamburg worked together with the founders of Gexsi, Andreas Renner, David Diallo and Kevin Fuchs.
They found solutions for obtaining digital donations which are then used for the support of social entrepreneurs. The core issue is that many social innovators who make a contribution to the society and have good ideas about how to make the world a better place do not manage to get any financial support. Gexsi, however, realized that in the digital world it is possible to generate money with the help of the search engine, and that money can be then donated to social good. Every two weeks, Gexsi presents another social project, each of which is financed with their users’ search queries. In that way, social impact can be created by filling up the gap between the social and the business field.
If you use Gexsi, you have the possibility to create social impact by simply switching your browser search engine. In that way, many social organizations such as “Coast Against Plastics” or “Conflict Food” could benefit from such a simple action.
